Toffee Time - Everton vs Villa

Off the back of a thrilla at the Villa we take a trip to Scouseland to take on the Blue half of the City.

Everton

The home team will want to bounce back from their Derby Defeat - one of the biggest for sometime.  They will be missing some key players with Lukaku and Coleman having picked up injuries in recent games.

Aston Villa

Likely line-up:

                                           Guzan

Lowton                    Vlaar                    Clarke                    Bertrand

                Westwood          El Ahmadi               Delph

                       Bacuna                          Weimann

                                              Benteke

Team News:

Villa will name an unchanged team from the one that beat the Baggies.  I expect Holt to have an impact late.  I think this game will come to soon for Gabby.

Prediction:

1-1

Match verdict

Despite breaking the speed limit on every road possible I approached Villa Park knowing the game had already kicked off.  I heard a distant cheer as if someone had scored I feared for the worst because it wasn’t the usual Holte roar.  People around me also running late started checking their phones, I overheard murmurs of 1-0 (surely not it was only 4 mins gone).  I checked my phone and sure enough Chris Brunt had scored!  I continued to approach Villa Park, I passed through the turn styles and there was that dreaded noise again…it was 2-0 to the visitors!  My phone went off and there was a message to say you might as well come home.  Strangely (for me) I was still confident as I went to my seat.  Untypically for Villa we were 2-0 down but the players heads had not dropped and they were battling and looked the better team.  Within 3 minutes of going 2-0 down the Baggies there was a punt forward it looked from where I was sat as though Benteke had flicked the ball to an offside Weimann, I waited for the flag to go up – no flag and GOAL!  I was feeling even more confident and the Baggies started to look nervous.  13 minutes later Bacuna took a swipe at a cross, he made a complete mess of the shot but our luck was in and the ball sailed over Ben fosters head and into the net 2-2 game on!  Villa’s 3rd goal was a screamer from OG culprit Fabian Delph, it came from some good interplay and no keeper in the world was stopping Delph‘s shot, it smashed the underside of the bar and went in.  As half time approached Villa got sloppy allowing WBA to thread a ball between Vlaar and Clarke (both collided in a Laurel and Hardy moment) and Mulumbu slotted the ball under the legs of an onrushing Brad Guzan – 3-3 have we blown it again?!  The second half proved a tight affair with Lugano proving the difference between the two sides.  The Uruguayan defender missed what can only be described as a sitter, before conceding a penalty which was despatched by Benteke (I didn’t think he would miss…honest).  4-3 to the Villa time to see out the match!

Player Ratings

Brad Guzan – 6 – He could do nothing about the opening two goals.  Usual consistent self without doing anything spectacular.

Matt Lowton – 4 – Backs out of 50/50 challenges, prone to day dreaming while wingers run in behind him.  Showing nothing of his first season form – second season syndrome.

Ron Vlaar – 8 – Could we be seeing the new Paul McGrath?!  Solid and reliable cleaned up other defenders mess.

Ciaran Clarke – 5 – Backwards step on recent performances.  His distribution was poor and defending suspect.

Ryan Bertrand – 7 – Looks reliable in defence and likes to get forward, looked tired in the second half but hopefully a few more games will sort that out.

Ashley Westwood – 6 – Mixed bag really some good passing, some awful passing.

Karim El Ahmadi – 6 – I have seen him described as a headless chicken but I thought in the 1st half at least he ran himself into the ground to close down.

Leandro Bacuna – 7 – played in the central midfield for much of the game with effect, scored a jammy goal via a miss kick but they all count.  Slotted in at right back late in the game and was solid.

Andreas Weimann – 8 – Looking more like the player of last season, took his goal well showing great composure.  Keep going Andi!

Christian Benteke – 7- Looking better every week should have had a couple more goals.  He is still not quite back to where he was but at least the goals are back.

Subs:

Grant Holt – 6 – Did what I expected, ran his arse off and got stuck in.  I think he is going to prove useful to us.

Yacouba Sylla – 3 – Wasn’t on the pitch long, but seemed to give the ball away with every touch he had.  Jogged to close the opposition down instead of busting a gut.  I expect more energy and commitment!

Nathan Baker – 6 – Did a job when sent on.

The aftermath

WBA look in trouble and are dropping at an alarming rate, they need reinforcements before the window slams shut.  Villa on the other hand are just 5 points behind Southampton – can we really start to look up or is it another false dawn.  If we can strengthen with a player or two then we could avoid the last day drama of a relegation battle, after the past few seasons that would be great.

Next up Everton away.

Derby Day - Bring on the Baggies!

So this is as good as we are going to get for I suspect a looooooong time due to Small Heaths continued decline.

It’s time to sort out our Home form and start looking up the table rather than down.  The new signings will improve the squad, and in Bertrand’s case the starting XI.  The last 4 encounters between the Baggies have ended in a draw but I have a good feeling about this one.

WBA

Currently sitting in 13th place just 2 points behind us in the race to avoid relegation.

Will Anelka play or not? Surely yes, he will want to make the most of his time on the pitch before his inevitable lengthy ban.  Pepe Mel will be taking charge of only his second game, he isn’t well known outside of Spain so it remains to be seen what kind of impact he will have.  I suspect they will be trying to play tikka takka football as this seems to be the latest "craze".

Aston Villa

Likely line-up:

                                           Guzan

Bacuna                    Vlaar                    Clarke                    Bertrand

         Westwood          El Ahmadi               Delph

      Weimann                           Holt

                             Benteke

Team News:

Gabby looks set to miss out due to a foot injury and he will be a big loss, he was arguably the star of the draw at Liverpool.  With no natural width in the attacking positions on the left I expect Bertrand to be encouraged to get forward at every opportunity.  Holt may play up top with Benteke rather than out wide giving much needed support and this will hopefully give Jonas Olsson something to think about.

Prediction:

2-1 to the Villa, the recent performance against LFC has given me some much needed positivity.

UTV!  Here's hoping Agent Ridgewell does us a favour.

The day I assisted Paul Birch for a 40 yard screamer!

No this wasn’t a dream it actually happened.  It was during a charity match in aid of Football Aid on Sunday 13th of May 2007.  I was playing football at Villa Park alongside the likes of Morley, Cowan’s, Birch and Burke, it was a dream come true.  My part in the goal was pretty simple, I laid off a sideways pass near the half way line, Birchy strolled forward a few yards and then boom! He smashed the ball and it flew into the back of the net like a rocket.  Granted the keeper was someone similar to me – just your average wannabe footballer – but a premier league keeper would have struggled to get anything on this shot.  To be fair to Birchy he obviously appreciated the quality in my pass ;-) because he tried to set me up from a corner to repay the favour, sadly I blazed over (Heskey style) and failed to net in the Holte (that would have capped off the perfect day).

It’s very sad that Paul Birch passed away at just 46 years of age on 2nd February 2009 (5th year anniversary is a week tomorrow), he was great pro who served my beloved Villa for 10 years.  I am glad to of met him, he seemed like a genuine guy who was keen for us all to enjoy our day.  I remember when he played for Villa and he always seemed to give 100%.  I was quite young in those days, to give you some idea how young I remember he was one of the last stickers I needed to fill the Villa pages of my Panini sticker book, and I also remember confusing him with Kevin Gage – they were the only two players sporting blond perms.  A side issue but bring back the Panini club! I met Tony Daley in their!

It’s amazing really that even when these top professional’s age they are still a class above the likes of you and me.  We spend most of our time singling out players as being useless and thinking we could do better (as I used to do with the likes of Jlloyd Samuel, and as everyone has done with Heskey at one point or another) but the truth is they would make us all look useless in your typical Sunday league match.  Unfortunately despite this realisation I will still have a pop at anyone that I feel isn’t giving their all, or that has annoyed me for one reason or another as you will probably notice from my blog.

This isn’t an affiliate link, and I am in no way profiting or making any kind of cash from this but I would highly recommend a Football Aid match as a present for any die hard Villan as I mentioned it was a dream come true (but is quite expensive), check out: http://www.footballaid.com/events/teams/19/aston-villa.html
